Course Aim

This one-day Capability Management—Overview course provides a brief overview of how the Australian Defence Organisation delivers and manages capability throughout the Defence capability life cycle. Attendees from Defence, other government agencies, and defence industry can gain an understanding of capability management processes, frameworks, and documents produced, as well as related government and Defence processes.  This course also introduces the key inter-related professional practices that are applied across the capability life cycle including systems engineering, program management, project management, product management, financial management, procurement and contracting, integrated logistics support (ILS), risk reduction, assurance and enterprise architecture.

Your Presenters

Dr Mike Ryan has over 40 years of experience in the Department of Defence in communications engineering, systems engineering, capability management, and management, the first 21 years as an Army officer. His recent consulting and teaching interests are in capability management/development, systems engineering, requirements engineering, project management, communications and information systems, and technology management. He has facilitated mission engineering and requirements development activities for more than 50 major Defence projects.

Dr Shari Soutberg has worked for over 30 years in the Department of Defence in roles ranging from engineering and project management for maritime systems through to senior policy positions in engineering, materiel acquisition and sustainment, industry, and technical and engineering workforce learning and development. She was also a member of the First Principles Review (FPR) Capability Lifecycle (CLC) reform team. More recently, Shari has supported Defence on a range of CLC-related topics including Project, Product, and Program Management with a particular focus on joint force integration using Mission Engineering and System of Systems (SoS) Engineering approaches.
